It’s been another pretty tame week while everyone waits for the season to get going, but Ben & Riley managed to hit up Hutt, and a couple of lads from Straya came over to demo Snowplanet for a few days. Add some classic scenery and some sick throwbacks and that’s this week on the gram!

Two Southerly fronts battered the city last week while we were all sitting at our desks scanning the forecasts when the boss wasn’t looking. There was a networking frenzy late on a Friday and before Saturday sunrise with a packed truck, we were heading inland. The Southern Alps were looking healthy, an uncommon site in early May.

The Mt Hutt road was rougher than any of us remembered and with a locked gate blocking the path the mission shifted to foot about 3km from the base. Riley was kind enough to lead the first boot pack and before long we were up by the triple chair.

We found a nice windlip to slash and pop off. We were all dusting off the cobwebs, trying grabs, spins and a few flips. After a quick bite to eat it was time to head for the shady faces to score some more untracked. The crew all worked their way down to the base, trying to spot that next bump or drop to launch off.

The snow-caked tussocks became perfect takeoffs with not even a pat down required. There were endless options with no one to poach ‘em and so we hiked and scored turns until our legs gave out.

A few beers were had at the end of a long and fun day. The first day of the season was done and dusted. And If Mother Nature sends out the call, we will all be up there again before the lifts start turning. With a little hard work there’s a long season to enjoy in New Zealand, with every slash appreciated and never taken for granted.

Q: What qualifications do I need?

A: An application checklist would attract the wrong sort of wintern. We’re looking for smart, dedicated shredders who have skills in writing, design, filming, editing, social media and more. Basically, if your a powermoving grommet keen on snowboarding and snowboard media that’s a great start.

Q: Where are internships located?

A: NZsnowboard.com HQ is based out of Wanaka but internet access in one of those 3 areas is all you need.

Q: Boom! I just applied to be a WINTERN. Now what?

A: If your application collects enough props from the team, we’ll be in touch by June 5th 2013 to set up some phone conversations. During these calls, we’ll want to learn more about your interests, snowboard experience, what you want to learn from us and what we can learn from you.

Q: Am I old enough to apply?

A: We can’t be babysitting and we are not your parents so NZsnowboard.com Wintern candidates must be at least 16 years old.

Q: I’m in high school. Can I still apply?

A: Totally, Even if your studying fulltime but can shred the weekends that’s no problem at all.

Q: How long does an internship last?

A: Winterns will work from June-Oct on a part time basis gaining experience on all sides of NZsnowboard.com and reporting direct to Justin Smith, Online Editor – Jake Munro, Head of Production & Robett Hollis, NZsnowboard.com Founding Director.
